As we make our way from Guatemala back to Honduras for debrief and our flight back, this is the journey we took.

Tuesday

1:30 P.M. Leave San Jaun

Hour long boat ride to the bus

3:00 P.M. Load Vans and leave for Antigua

6:00 P.M. Arrive in Antigua

Play spades, drums, and roast marshmallows till 3:00 A.M. (Monday)

3 A.M. Load vans

4:00 A.M Leave Antigua on a packed full bus of packs and more people than seats

10:00 A.M. Get stopped in traffic

12:00 P.M. Still stuck

2:00 P.M. Start moving, oh wait false alarm, still stuck and sweating through the seat of the bus

3:00 P.M. Eat a lunch of chips and dry cereal

5:00 P.M. Were off and moving at a constant speed. The happiness of this moment compared closely to a child eating his first chocolate bar.

If you were curious as to what these 7 hours of roadside fun consisted of here is a short synopsis:

  1. Wait and sweat
  2. Get out of the van and try to read
  3. Overcome by the sun get back in van
  4. Try to sleep but too sweaty
  5. Praise the lord a man selling ice cream walks by! The ice cream sucks but I buy 3 anyway
  6. Find a bush to take care of business, good thing I found some napkins on the side of the road
  7. Many false alarms where we quickly load the van to move 10 feet and then stop again
  8. A few walks to scope the accident, never able to reach the end
  9. Laugh a little, cry a little, pray a lot!

6:00 P.M. Arrive at the Honduras border and corral 60 people and passports

7:30 P.M. Corral the gang again to eat a decent meal other than chips and ding-dongs (at this point most everyone is loopy out of their minds or sick and puking)

9:30 P.M. Back on the road with hopes of driving all the way through the night

The next 13 hours in the bus slipping in and out of consciousness, pit stops, movies, candy bars, and only a few fits of madness

Finally after 56 hours of traveling from San Juan to the Valley of Angels, we finally arrive at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, load off packs, eat some pancakes, take a nice cold shower, and crash for the rest of the day. In perspective to the circumstances, this hostel is the most luxurious place I have been.

I cannot believe that we are already 3 months into this trip. God has done so much already and I can’t imagine all that he still has in store. More to come on my time in Guatemala in the next blog post. I apologize for not writing many blogs, God has been working in many ways. Our time from Honduras to Guatemala has been trying but so rewarding. I will update soon!

  1. Wow! Sounds awful. I hope the debriefing time is good, and then off to the Philippines. We are blessed that our travels are much easier. Counting my blessings!
